What is a QR Code powered by GS1?

A QR Code powered by GS1 can carry substantially more information than a linear barcode. As well as carrying a product's GTIN (Global Trade Item Number), it can also contain additional data like batch numbers, expiry dates and serial numbers. It can be scanned at retail point-of-sale and by consumers with a smartphone.

When will retailers start scanning QR Codes powered by GS1?

GS1 is working with local retailers with the goal of enabling all retail point-of-sale systems in New Zealand to scan QR Codes powered by GS1 by the end of 2027.

What is a GTIN and do I need one?

Accepted Answer

Also known as a barcode number, a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is a unique identifier for products. Many major New Zealand retailers and online marketplaces like Amazon require GTINs from GS1.

Can I use the same barcode for different products?

Accepted Answer

No, each unique product requires its own GTIN. Different sizes, colours or variants of the same product each need their own barcode.

Can I license a single barcode number (GTIN)?

Accepted Answer

Yes! You can license single barcode numbers (GTINs) as a Single Number Member if your turnover is less than $1m. This option is suitable for newer businesses and has no ongoing membership fee. However, we do recommend you consider full GS1 membership. This is usually a cheaper option as you grow, and includes access to a variety of services that scale with you and help you get your products to market.

How do I create a QR Code powered by GS1?

GS1 members can set up, create and download QR Codes powered by GS1 directly in MyGS1 , our member portal.

Do I need to replace my existing EAN-13 barcode?

Accepted Answer

Linear barcodes such as EAN-13 can continue to be used when needed or preferred. During the transition, we recommend including both your traditional EAN-13 barcode and a QR Code powered by GS1 on packaging so your products scan reliably across all retailers.

What is the National Product Catalogue (NPC)?

GS1’s National Product Catalogue (NPC) is a single, secure platform to manage, store and share your product data. Load your product data once or make changes to existing products – your data is validated for accuracy by GS1 and then shared with all your trading partners. Learn more on our NPC service page .

How are QR Codes powered by GS1 different to standard QR codes?

Standard QR codes link to a single fixed URL and cannot be scanned at retail point-of-sale. QR Codes powered by GS1 contain structured product data, 'beep' at retail point-of-sale, and let you update your linked content without reprinting packaging.

Once you become a GS1 member, you'll receive a GS1 Company Prefix and can create GTINs for your products. We'll guide you through the process and provide access to MyGS1, our online member portal.

How do I get my barcode verified?

I'm selling my business, can I transfer my membership?

Yes! If you've sold your business, you can transfer your membership and barcodes to the new owner. Please complete the transfer form to start the process.

How do I cancel my membership?

We'd hate to see you go! But if you need to cancel your membership, please complete our cancellation form . Note, your GS1 barcodes are licensed through your membership. When the membership ends, you'll no longer be able to use your GS1 barcode numbers.
